Human Hair Wigs are a quick and easy way to change your look in minutes. But they require maintenance, just like your natural hair. If you have an old wig or even a new one that you’ve neglected, keep reading. In this blog, we will quickly discuss the following topics:

  1. Tips on what NOT to do with your human hair wig
  2. Four steps to Revive your Wig

Common Wig Maintenance Mistakes

Before we jump into how to make your wig look and feel like new, let’s go over some reasons why it may be dry in the first place. Not all issues with your wigs are due to neglect.

Sometimes it may be your maintenance routine. Take a moment to ensure you’re not making a few of the comment wig mistakes below. A few simple corrections in your routine may be all you need to keep your wig looking as bouncy and flowy as the day you bought it.

Wrong Shampoo

I know it’s tempting to grab an inexpensive shampoo to wash a wig but remember, you’re dealing with human hair. Using the wrong shampoo can strip the hair, causing it to feel rough and coarse. Ensure you use a sulfate-free or moisturizing shampoo to wash the hair gently.

Don’t forget to follow up with a good conditioner that softens the hair, making it more manageable. Rinse with cool water to close the cuticle.

Frequent Heat Styling

Frequent heat styling removes moisture from the hair. Since its wig is not getting natural oils and nutrients from the scalp, frequent heat styling will further strip the hair of its moisture.

Unlike synthetic ones, you can style human hair wigs with heat. But because it’s human hair, it’s prone to heat damage like your natural hair.

If you are using hot tools, apply a heat protectant and keep the temperature moderate. Heat damage to a wig will cause it to feel coarse and brittle and require cutting the damaged ends.

4 Simple Steps Below to Refresh Your Human Hair Wig

Reviving the silkiness of your human hair wigs is not as difficult as it sounds. You can make your human hair wig silky again at home. Here are six easy steps you can follow to refresh your course dull wig into a wig your ready to add to your favorites list.

Step 1 - Detangling

Detangling the hair is the first and extremely important part of this process. For this step, I suggest using a wide tooth comb, a water bottle and an inexpensive conditioner to loosen the tangles. Also, a mannequin head will make the process easier, but it’s not required.

First, divide the hair into sections and apply a generous amount of conditioner to each section. Using a wide-toothed comb, gently start combing from the bottom and work out the tangles until you get to the root. Be patient working through the hair to avoid damaging the hair.

After the wig is tangle-free, rinse the hair with warm water until all the conditioner is removed.

Tip: Avoid applying conditioner to the base of the wig. This can loosen the hair, causing it to fall.

Step 2 - Cleansing

If you are using a mannequin head, remove the wig and shampoo thoroughly with a sulfate-free, moisturizing shampoo.

Do not rub the hair strands together, but ensure you work the shampoo into the hair, ensuring not to tangle the hair.

Once you're done, rinse the hair with cool water and repeat the shampooing process until the hair is free of any product buildup and you’re sure it’s clean.

Step 3 - Rinse

Place the wig back on the mannequin head and comb through the hair, making sure it’s still tangle-free.

Apply your tried-and-true moisturizing conditioner to the wig, ensuring the strands, not the wig base are coated evenly. A good deep conditioner will revitalize the hair making it soft and manageable.

After you've applied it, let the conditioner stay according to the vendors instructions and rinse off with cool water to close the cuticle.

Step 4 - Styling

You've shampooed, conditioned, and rinsed. Now, it's time to style the wig.

Begin by squeezing out the excess water gently and place the wig back on the wig stand.

Air drying your wigs is always a safe option.  But if you have a straight wig, you may prefer to blow dry the hair.    For blow drying or heat styling, remember to use a heat protectant and moderate heat.
